Emergency Preparedness Tips

When it comes to planning and preparing for violent weather, everyone has a role to play. Know the risks and consider the specific needs of your household. Prepare an emergency plan, and assemble a basic emergency kit. For tips on creating a household plan and kit, visit www.redcross.ca/prepare.

Pay close attention to weather forecasts and warnings. Even a weakening storm below hurricane strength can pack enough wind and rain to cause widespread damage, and they can change direction and intensity very quickly.
Do not go to the shore or waterfront to watch the storm as large waves and storm surge can appear rapidly and with deadly consequences. If you live next to open water, consider moving inland until the storm has passed.
Obey warnings and evacuation orders if they are issued by public authorities. These warnings are for your safety.

BEFORE THE STORM ARRIVES

  • Ensure you have some cash in smaller denominations and coins. In a power outage, bank machines and debit or credit cards may not be working for some time.
  • Secure outdoor gates, furniture, trash cans, hanging plants and anything else that can be blown around and cause damage. Secure boats and other watercraft or take them out of the water and to higher ground.
  • Trim dead branches from trees, or remove dead trees entirely, as these can be easily toppled or sent flying through the air by powerful winds.
  • Park your vehicle in a garage or away from trees, and fill the tank before the storm hits as power outages could make it impossible to get fuel during and immediately after the storm.

SAMPLE ITEMS FOR A HOUSEHOLD EMERGENCY KIT

  • At least two litres of water per person per day for drinking, and two each for cooking/cleaning
  • Some non-perishable food that doesn't require cooking (e.g. canned or dried food, energy bars)
  • Manual can opener
  • Flashlight and a battery-powered or wind-up radio (and extra batteries)
  • First aid kit
  • Special needs items (e.g. prescription medications, infant formula)
  • A spare key for your house and car
  • Cash in smaller bills and coins in case bank machines, debit and credit cards aren't working
  • A copy of your emergency plan and emergency contact list
  • Change of clothing and some toiletries
  • Sleeping bag or warm blanket
  • Garbage bags
  • A few basic tools (e.g. hammer, pliers, multi-tip screwdriver, work gloves)
  • A whistle (to attract attention if injured)
  • Duct tape and some plastic sheeting for emergency repairs
  • Fire extinguisher
